Front Load Washer Buying Guide

Compare capacity, features, and installation options before choosing your washer.

Choose the Right Capacity

Consider your household size and the types of laundry you regularly wash when comparing washer capacity. Larger-capacity front load washers provide additional room for towels, bedding, comforters, and larger household loads.

Quick Tip: If you regularly wash bulky bedding or large family loads, compare higher-capacity models while also checking that the washer will fit your available laundry space.

Compare Washer Features

Front load washers are available with features such as steam, sanitize cycles, quick wash settings, smart connectivity, automatic detergent dispensing, specialty cycles, and additional fabric-care options.

Quick Tip: Focus on features you will regularly use rather than choosing a washer based only on the number of available cycles.

Side-by-Side or Stackable?

Many front load washers can be installed beside a matching dryer or stacked underneath a compatible dryer to save floor space. Stacking compatibility varies by brand and model.

Quick Tip: If you plan to stack your washer and dryer, verify model compatibility and purchase the manufacturer-approved stacking kit before installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful information for choosing and using a front load washer.

Are front load washers easier to use than top load washers?

Front load washers require users to bend down to load and unload the drum unless the washer is installed on a compatible pedestal. Many models offer convenient digital controls, smart features, and the ability to stack with a compatible dryer. The best design depends on your space, mobility, and personal preference.

Do front load washers have faster wash cycles?

Cycle times vary by model and selected settings. Standard front load cycles can take longer than some top load cycles, while many models include quick wash settings designed for smaller or lightly soiled loads.

Can I use regular detergent in a front load washer?

Front load washers are generally designed for High-Efficiency (HE) detergent. HE detergent produces fewer suds and is formulated for washers that use less water. Always follow the washer manufacturer's detergent recommendations and use the appropriate amount for your load.

Are front load washers more affordable?

Prices vary by brand, capacity, and features. Front load washers may have a higher initial purchase price than some top load models, but many are designed to use less water and provide efficient operation. Compare purchase price, features, capacity, and estimated energy use when choosing a washer.

Are front load washers reliable for everyday use?

Yes. Front load washers are designed for regular household laundry and use a tumbling wash action to clean clothing. Reliability varies by model, usage, installation, and maintenance, so following the manufacturer's care instructions is important.

Can front load washers and dryers be stacked?

Many front load washers can be stacked with a compatible dryer using a manufacturer-approved stacking kit. Not every washer and dryer combination is compatible, so verify the specific model requirements before purchasing.

How do I help prevent odors in a front load washer?

Regular maintenance can help keep a front load washer fresh. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions, periodically clean the door gasket and detergent dispenser, remove damp clothing promptly, and allow the washer interior to dry between loads when recommended.

What size front load washer should I buy?

Choose capacity based on household size, laundry frequency, and the types of items you regularly wash. Larger-capacity washers provide more room for family-sized loads and bulky items, while available installation space should also be considered.

Do front load washers use less water?

Front load washers are designed to clean clothing using a tumbling action and generally use less water than traditional deep-fill washing methods. Actual water use varies by model, cycle, load size, and selected settings.

Do front load washers have smart features?

Select front load washers include smart features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone notifications, remote monitoring, downloadable cycles, and maintenance alerts. Available smart features vary by brand and model.
